This Merlin was sitting on a TV antenna in town on January 4. I was surprised to see it, because Merlins usually don’t stay through our winters,

  1. Nice picture! Oddly enough I had a Merlin on the telephone wire behind our house on Jan 5th of last year – my only yard record of the species. My shiny new 6th Edition National Geographic field guide says that the whole of south-eastern Alberta is year-round range for Merlins – I’m not sure how far north you are but with this weather I wouldn’t be surprised with them anywhere in the province.

    • I live two and a half hours east of Edmonton. The weather has been mild enough, so the Merlins wouldn’t have too hard of a time wintering over in a range that is more northern than their usual range. I hope the Merlin is able to stay through the winter, and if it does I hope to see it again.
